Again I say to you… Rejoice!

“Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice!” Philippians 4:4

Paul’s call to the Christians in Philippi is well known in Christian circles – but familiarity can breed a sort of contempt, indifference, or inability to be truly impacted by a wonderful exhortation. Paul’s instruction implies cause – we have many reasons to rejoice. But even, our hope and salvation in Christ.

Right now I’m rejoicing over new things – a new blog, new lessons in Scripture – but what I’m anticipating most of all is my new season of life as a soon-to-be mum. This change brings with it plenty of preparation and needs, both temporal and spiritual, but through all of it we have a firm and strong foundation upon which to continue rejoicing. This is a wonderful freedom and grace; to be able to tolerate and even enjoy life when hard times or suffering comes. The epistle of James, the half-brother of our Lord, wrote us a similar instruction in James 1:2-3: Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Consider, then, this foundation for joy that we have – do trials and suffering toss you about, crushing your joy? How much do you really trust in God for fulfilling joy? Along with your salvation, what other blessings or experiences are there in your life that you can rejoice in?  Are there people in your life – family, friends, small group members, neighbours – who are facing a difficult time, who need your compassion, encouragement and prayer?

There’s a great excuse for a shopping trip or fun coffee catch up!
